Corporate Manslaughter Charges Filed Over Fatal Pontins Collapse
A horrific incident at Pontins Brean Sands Holiday Park in Somerset that killed 68-year-old Wendy Jones and injured others has landed the park’s parent firm in hot water. Britannia Jinky Jersey Ltd now faces charges of corporate manslaughter following the dangerous collapse of ducting in August 2019.
Deadly Collapse Sparks Manslaughter Case
Wendy Jones tragically lost her life when building ducting gave way inside the popular holiday venue. After an exhaustive probe led by Avon and Somerset Police alongside Somerset Council, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has charged Britannia Jinky Jersey Ltd under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007.
Adding fuel to the fire, Stephen Bennison, 58, from Lancashire, faces charges for failing to meet health and safety duties under Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Both defendants are due in front of Bristol Magistrates’ Court on 6 May 2025.
Complex Investigation Reveals Failures
Detective Superintendent Roger Doxsey, who headed the probe, called the case “complex,” highlighting close work between police and council officials.
“The charges follow a detailed and thorough review of the evidence provided by Avon and Somerset Police. We remind all parties that the legal process is now active and commentary that could prejudice the case must be avoided.” – CPS spokesperson
Legal Stakes and Safety Warnings
The prosecution underscores the vital role of UK health and safety laws designed to protect workers and the public alike. The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 allows firms to face unlimited fines and mandatory safety measures if found guilty of gross breaches.
Last year, the Health and Safety Executive reported 135 work-related deaths and 68 public fatalities linked to workplace incidents across the UK. More than 7,000 enforcement actions were taken to tackle ongoing risks.
Shockwaves Felt Across Somerset Community
The tragedy rocked holidaymakers and locals in Brean Sands, a favourite getaway spot near Burnham-on-Sea. Tributes poured in for Wendy Jones, remembered as a “kind, loving woman” enjoying a family break.
Next Steps in Legal Battle
The case kicks off in Bristol Magistrates’ Court in May and may escalate to Crown Court. CPS and Avon and Somerset Police urge the public to avoid speculation and respect the ongoing investigation.
