A 25-year-old man who violently robbed a 92-year-old woman in Rainham has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison. Jerry Maughan, of Maya Place, Wood Green, London, pleaded guilty to the attack, which took place on Church Path on the afternoon of 11 March 2024.
The Incident: A Callous Crime
Kent Police were alerted shortly after 1 pm when the distressed pensioner sought help at a High Street premises. The elderly victim recounted how she was walking her dog and pushing her trolley near the churchyard when Maughan approached.

He initially bent down to fuss over the dog, seemingly harmless, before snatching the woman’s handbag. The victim tried to hold on to her property, but in the struggle, she was knocked to the ground, sustaining an injury to her face. Maughan then fled on foot, leaving the elderly woman shaken and injured.
Swift Police Action
Officers responded rapidly, conducting enquiries in the area. Within just a few hours, around 4 pm, Maughan was arrested at a nearby address. He was subsequently charged the following day and appeared at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday 4 April 2025, where he admitted to the robbery.
Sentencing and Police Statement
Judge Robert Simmonds sentenced Maughan to three years and four months imprisonment, condemning his callous disregard for the victim’s welfare.
