After breaking into an address in Hawthorn Square, Seaham, in the early hours of Friday, Andrew Bywater and Michael Claydon stole a handbag, an iPhone, cash, tobacco, and a bike (May 6).
However, as they attempted to flee the scene, they were interrupted by the victim, who pursued them and recovered his bike.
Bywater and Claydon fled on foot, throwing some of the stolen property back at the victim, but were apprehended and arrested two hours later on suspicion of burglary.
They both appeared in Durham Crown Court for sentencing this morning (June 6).
Bywater, 33, of Alwin, Washington, was sentenced to 27 months in prison.
Claydon, 33, of Chelmsford Street in Darlington, was sentenced to three years in prison.
“We fully understand the emotional impact burglaries can have on victims and the wider effect it can have on nearby residents,” said A/Detective Inspector Victoria Ford-Stubbs of Seaham CID.
“We will act quickly and forcefully to bring offenders like Bywater and Clayton to justice who believe they can steal from hardworking people.”
