Two Men Charged with Murder in Connection to 2016 Haringey Shooting

Two men have been charged with murder following the death of Joel Bempah-Cumberbatch, who suffered fatal injuries after being shot in the head in Haringey nearly a decade ago.

The shooting occurred on August 30, 2016, at approximately 3:22 PM on Turnpike Lane, Wood Green. Bempah-Cumberbatch, then 25 years old, was rushed to hospital with a gunshot wound to the head, which left him with severe brain damage.

After battling his injuries for several years, he sadly died on September 20, 2022.

Previous Convictions and Murder Charges

In 2017, two men were convicted of attempted murder in relation to the shooting and were sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 13 years.

Following Bempah-Cumberbatch’s death, detectives from Specialist Crime North submitted new evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, leading to fresh murder charges.

They later appeared at the Central Criminal Court on March 5, where a trial date was scheduled for February 16, 2026.

The pair will next appear at the Old Bailey on May 21, 2025.
