A woman who fatally stabbed a man in a random and unprovoked attack in Bristol has been sentenced to a hospital order.
Christina Howell, 37, was found to have stabbed 61-year-old Hubert Brown during an incident in 2023. The court heard that Howell attacked Mr Brown without warning, leading to his tragic death.
Following psychiatric evaluations, Howell pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility. A judge ruled that she should be detained under a hospital order for ongoing mental health treatment.

During the sentencing, the court was told that Howell’s severe mental illness had significantly impaired her judgment at the time of the attack.
The judge said:
“This was a senseless and devastating loss of life. While Ms Howell’s responsibility was diminished, the consequences for Mr Brown’s family and the wider community have been profound.
Howell will remain in a secure hospital facility for treatment and will be subject to regular review.
Avon and Somerset Police praised the bravery and dignity of Mr Brown’s family throughout the court proceedings.
A spokesperson for the force added:
“We hope today’s outcome provides some sense of closure to those who loved Mr Brown. Our thoughts remain with them at this very difficult time.”
