Emotional tributes have poured in for PD Zyla, a beloved Leicestershire police dog who tragically lost her life in the line of duty. The courageous German Shepherd passed away on Wednesday, July 3, while responding to an emergency incident at Watermead Park.
The incident began when officers were called to the park following reports that a suspect sought by Nottinghamshire Police was in the area. PD Zyla was deployed to assist in locating the individual, who attempted to flee by entering the water. Zyla bravely pursued the suspect but tragically became unresponsive during the chase.
On Thursday, August 22, Zyla’s handler, who has chosen to remain unnamed, broke their silence during a poignant ceremony held at Leicestershire Police headquarters in Enderby. In an emotional statement, the handler reflected on the devastating loss: “3 July was the most difficult day of my career. I write this knowing I will forever hold you tightly within my heart. The day you were taken from me, a piece of me died with you.”
Zyla’s death sent shockwaves through the Leicestershire Police force. The force held a memorial service attended by officers, staff, and special guests, including Chief Constable Rob Nixon. He paid tribute to Zyla, describing her as “a protector of our communities” and “the perfect partner to her handler.” He reassured those present that the force would “never forget her service.”
Zyla’s handler praised her remarkable abilities, saying, “You tracked like no other. If there was a gap to fit through, you would find it!”
In recognition of Zyla’s dedication and sacrifice, the Thin Blue Paw Foundation presented her handler with a posthumous bravery award during the ceremony. The Kent Police Officers honoured at awards ceremony" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-wpil-monitor-id="51589">award honours the courage and service of police dogs like Zyla, who give their all in the line of duty.
The service concluded with a heartfelt prayer led by Lead Chaplain Shirley Dudfield. She offered words of comfort to Zyla’s handler, family, and the dog unit, saying, “May the togetherness we feel in our sorrow today continue to unite us as we work with, and for, one another to improve and enrich our world.”
Zyla’s legacy will be remembered for her unwavering loyalty and bravery, serving the community with all her heart until the very end.
