Leicestershire Police Dog Zyla Dies Heroically in the Line of Duty
Tributes are flooding in for PD Zyla, a brave Leicestershire police dog who tragically died while on duty. The fearless German Shepherd lost her life on Wednesday, July 3, during an emergency response at Watermead Park.
Chase Ends in Tragedy
The drama unfolded when officers were called to the park after reports a suspect wanted by Nottinghamshire Police was nearby. Zyla was sent in to help track down the man, who tried to escape by diving into the water. The courageous dog pursued him relentlessly but sadly became unresponsive during the chase.
Despite vets’ best efforts, Zyla could not be saved. The suspect, a 27-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. Nottinghamshire Police are leading the investigation into the original offence and the circumstances surrounding Zyla’s death.
Heartbreaking Tribute from Handler
On Thursday, August 22, Zyla’s handler spoke for the first time at a moving ceremony held at Leicestershire Police headquarters in Enderby. Choosing to remain anonymous, they said:
“3 July was the most difficult day of my career. I write this knowing I will forever hold you tightly within my heart. The day you were taken from me, a piece of me died with you.”
The loss sent shockwaves through the force. Chief Constable Rob Nixon described Zyla as “a protector of our communities” and “the perfect partner to her handler.” He vowed the force would “never forget her service.”
A Hero Remembered and Honoured
Zyla’s handler praised her exceptional skills: “You tracked like no other. If there was a gap to fit through, you would find it!”
In recognition of her bravery, the Thin Blue Paw Foundation posthumously awarded Zyla’s handler a bravery award, honouring the courage and sacrifice of police dogs who put themselves in harm’s way.
The memorial ended with a heartfelt prayer from Lead Chaplain Shirley Dudfield: “May the togetherness we feel in our sorrow today continue to unite us as we work with, and for, one another to improve and enrich our world.”
Zyla’s legacy of loyalty and courage will never be forgotten. She served her community with all her heart, right up to the very end.
