Triple Russian Spy Ring Busted in Great Yarmouth Seaside Guesthouse

The ‘Minions’ Spy Ring Exposed

Three Brits have been convicted of running a slick espionage racket for Russia from a seaside guesthouse in Great Yarmouth. Dubbed ‘the Minions’ after the cheeky cartoon sidekicks, the trio operated under Russian GRU handlers, spying on political dissidents, security figures, and investigative journalists across the UK.

  • Katrin Ivanova, 33, lab assistant from Harrow, North London
  • Vanya Gaberova, 30, beautician from Acton, West London
  • Tihomir Ivanchev, 39, painter and decorator from Enfield, North London

All were linked to former City financier Orlin Roussev, 46, who bought the Haydee Guesthouse for £220,000 as their espionage HQ.

Spy Network Tied to Notorious Fugitive

The outfit had ties to Austrian fugitive Jan Marsalek, 44, wanted over the £1.6bn Wirecard fraud and believed to be hiding in Russia. Marsalek allegedly pulled strings remotely from abroad.

Using fake identities and cutting-edge tech, the gang operated between August 2020 and February 2023. Police recovered more than 80,000 encrypted messages revealing their spying scale and scope.

Targets included whistleblowers, Western intelligence officials, and Bellingcat investigative journalist Christo Grozev, who’s known for exposing Russian spy tactics.

‘Indiana Jones Warehouse’ of Spy Gadgets

Police swooped in an eight-day raid, uncovering an arsenal of espionage kit at the guesthouse:

  • 495 SIM cards and 221 mobile phones
  • 258 hard drives and 55 recording devices
  • 16 radios, 11 drones, plus a £120,000 IMSI grabber to intercept phone data
  • Spy gear hidden in wristwatches, pens, sunglasses and car keys
  • 91 bank cards and 75 passports linked to 55 fake identities

Roussev fancied himself ‘Q’ from James Bond and called the guesthouse an ‘Indiana Jones warehouse’ brimming with spy tools.

Dirty Tricks and Dark Plots

Investigators uncovered Marsalek’s chilling messages plotting fresh hits after the failed 2018 Salisbury poisoning of ex-double agent Sergei Skripal. The ring tried dirty tactics like sticking far-right propaganda at Jewish sites in Vienna and Berlin to smear Ukraine. They also planned to use drones to douse the Kazakhstan Embassy in London with pig’s blood in a fake protest.

‘Spying on an Industrial Scale,’ Cops Warn

Commander Dominic Murphy of the Met’s counterterror unit SO15 slammed the operation as “spying on an almost industrial scale on behalf of Russian intelligence.”

“The activities of this group strike at the very heart of national security and the freedoms we strive to protect in the UK.”

Roussev and logistics man Biser Dzhambazov, 43, pleaded guilty earlier. The other three ringleaders denied charges but were found guilty after a detailed trial.

Sentencing Looms Amid Rising Spy Fears

All five remain behind bars, with sentencing set for May 7-12, 2025. The case has sparked urgent calls for beefed-up UK counterespionage, as Moscow’s shadowy spy games grow ever more aggressive.

Authorities keep probing for more operatives linked to the ring, fearing some remain active across the UK and wider Europe.
