Residents in several Sunderland neighbourhoods are once again facing a wave of vehicle-related crimes, with the latest incidents reported in the South Bents area. These break-ins mark an unsettling continuation of criminal activity, as local residents have been dealing with heightened concerns over car and home security for the past two months.

Recent break-ins have occurred overnight, with one South Bents resident discovering their vehicle had been accessed despite it being securely locked. The perpetrator rifled through the glove compartment and various other areas of the car, stealing loose change, a bottle of aftershave, and a soft drink. Strikingly, there was no visible damage to the vehicle, leading police to believe the criminals may be using advanced tools to unlock the doors remotely.

Residents are being urged by local authorities to remain vigilant, ensure their vehicles are securely locked, and report any suspicious activity. CCTV footage and doorbell camera footage are also being reviewed by investigators, with police hopeful that the community can help identify those responsible.

With vehicle-related crime on the rise, the latest statistics reveal that 151 street-level crimes were reported in June 2024 in South Bents, with 39 incidents related to violent crime and 20 incidents tied to vehicle-related offences.

Authorities are advising residents to enhance the security of their homes and vehicles and to be cautious of advanced tools that criminals might be using to bypass traditional locking mechanisms.

As investigations continue, Sunderland residents remain on high alert, seeking reassurance that the situation will be resolved and the individuals responsible for these ongoing break-ins will be brought to justice.
