On Monday afternoon, Newhaven Lifeboat and Coastguard Helicopter 163 from Lydd were scrambled to an incident in the English Channel, south of Cuckmere Haven. The alert was raised after HM Coastguard received reports of a diver in distress.
The diver was airlifted to Brighton and taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH), where he was sadly pronounced dead.
A Sussex Police spokesman provided a statement: “Sussex Police were informed by HM Coastguard of a diver having been rescued from the sea off east Brighton at around 2.50pm on Monday. A man in his 50s was taken to hospital, where he was sadly pronounced deceased. His next of kin have been informed.”
