A 42-year-old woman has been arrested after a car hit three adults and three children outside a sports centre in Newcastle. The nearby Newcastle Central Mosque said the collision outside Westgate Sports Centre happened immediately after people were leaving the mosque following Eid prayers. However police said the collision is “not believed to be a terror incident” after initial fears of an attack similar to the recent incident at London’s Finsbury Park. Northumbria Police said the injured six are being treated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary after the collision just before 9.15am. [ytp_video source=”1R1lDBBQrNU”]

Newcastle Central Mosque described the incident in a statement. “Immediately after the Eid prayers, when the people were starting to leave the venue, a car collided with pedestrians. “The injured were immediately attended to by the emergency medical services and the police. All the injured have been taken to the hospital. “We pray and hope that all those affected recover soon fully.” A host of emergency services were sent to the scene, including six ambulances and two paramedic rapid response vehicles. An air ambulance, three ambulance officers, four hazardous area response team vehicles and two paramedic trauma cars were also sent. Newcastle Central Mosque thanked the emergency response and confirmed it was backed by a large number of volunteers from the mosque. They were able to clear the area promptly ensuring there was no delay in the injured being attended to. A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received our first 999 call at 9.15 this morning to report a car that had mounted the kerb. Northumbria Police said: “Police inquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what happened but, at this time, it is not believed to be a terror incident. “Police have arrested a 42-year-old woman who is currently in police custody.”
