Police have arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder following a road traffic collision on Shaftesbury Avenue, London, in the early hours of Christmas Day.
Officers were called at approximately 12:45hrs on Wednesday, 25 December, to reports of a car driving on the wrong side of the road and mounting the pavement. Four pedestrians were injured in the incident, with one remaining in a life-threatening condition in hospital.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy provided an update on the investigation, saying:
Officers responded quickly to this report, working closely with City of London Police to arrest a man within minutes.
Detectives are quickly progressing enquiries as part of this investigation. It’s believed that the suspect was involved in an altercation at a nightclub prior to getting in his car and mounting the pavement.
Several scenes remain in place at the location today.
This has been confirmed as an isolated incident which is not terrorism-related.”
Emergency services worked swiftly to treat the injured pedestrians and secure the area. The road remains cordoned off as officers continue their forensic examination and gather evidence.
