A bedroom fire in Woodberry Grove, Bexley, was caused by sunlight reflecting off a mirror onto bedding, Kent Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed. The incident occurred on Friday, November 29, 2024, and required the attendance of two fire engines.
Quick Response
Fire crews arrived promptly and, wearing breathing apparatus, used a high-pressure hose reel jet to extinguish the flames. A positive-pressure ventilation fan was also employed to clear smoke from the property. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Cause of the Fire
The fire is believed to have started accidentally when sunlight reflected off a mirror and ignited the bedding. This rare but preventable cause of fire has prompted firefighters to issue safety advice to the public.
Safety Warning
Following the incident, Kent Fire and Rescue Service urged homeowners to take precautions:
“Ensure all mirrors and reflective objects such as crystal and glass ornaments are kept out of direct sunlight to reduce the risk of a fire.”
Reflective surfaces can focus sunlight onto flammable materials, creating a serious fire hazard, particularly during sunny weather or in well-lit rooms.
Community Awareness
The incident highlights the importance of identifying potential fire risks in the home. Kent Fire and Rescue Service continues to promote fire safety education to reduce the likelihood of similar events.
