Police Investigate Vandalism of Pride Mural in Huntington

Law enforcement is actively investigating an incident involving a red pickup truck that defaced a newly installed Pride mural and crosswalk. The act of vandalism, which occurred less than three days after the mural’s installation, was captured on video on Wednesday evening.

The footage shows the driver performing burnouts on the mural, leaving visible tyre marks. The mural, part of a celebration and show of support for the LGBTQ+ community was intended to be a symbol of inclusivity and pride in Huntington.

Police and Community Response

The Huntington Police Department is working closely with Huntington Pride to repair the damage and ensure the mural is restored. Authorities have confirmed their awareness of the video and are currently reviewing the footage to identify the driver responsible for the act.

Police are appealing to the public for any additional information that could assist in their investigation. They encourage anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward.

Condemnation from Officials

Local officials and community leaders have condemned the act of vandalism. This act of defacement is not just an attack on the mural, but an attack on the values of inclusivity and respect that our community stands for,” said Mayor Steve Williams. We will not tolerate hate and will work diligently to ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice.

Community Support

Despite the incident, the Huntington community has rallied in support of the mural and what it represents. Huntington Pride has expressed gratitude for the swift response from law enforcement and the community’s solidarity.

“We are heartened by the overwhelming support from our community,” said a spokesperson for Huntington Pride. Acts of hate will not overshadow the message of love and acceptance that our Pride mural stands for.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation is ongoing, and police are determined to hold those responsible accountable. We are committed to finding the individual who committed this act and ensuring they face the consequences of their actions,” said Police Chief Hank Dial. “Hate has no place in Huntington.”
