In a recent analysis by consumer watchdog Which?, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Merton, and Wrexham emerge as prime retirement destinations in the UK. The study, based on responses from over 1,000 members, sheds light on the priorities of individuals approaching retirement.

Healthcare access took the lead, with 88% of respondents deeming it crucial, followed by green space (75%), and proximity to local leisure activities (31%). Low crime levels also featured prominently in retirees’ preferences.

The comprehensive analysis considered factors such as healthcare, happiness, green space, and house price affordability. Newcastle-under-Lyme, with a remarkable score of 9.6 out of 10 for green space, secured its place among the top retirement spots. The area’s overall score for health and wellbeing stands at 7.9, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Merton, in South West London, excelled in healthcare (9.4/10) and green spaces (9.6/10). Despite an average house price of £560,000, its vibrant communities, including Wimbledon Village, and cultural events like the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament, make it an attractive retirement location.

Wrexham, the county borough in Wales, gained attention, not only for its football club’s newfound celebrity status but also for being a top retirement choice. Scoring 9.1 out of 10 for green spaces, and with an average house price of £180,000, Wrexham offers a mix of natural beauty and affordability.

Northern Ireland’s Mid and East Antrim secured the top spot with a perfect healthcare score of 10 out of 10, boasting 81 surgeries per 100,000 registered patients. Additionally, the area presents an affordable average house price of £139,000.

The Outer Hebrides took the lead in Scotland, scoring high for healthcare (9.7/10) and happiness (8/10). With an average house price of £137,000, the stunning coastlines and impressive health and wellbeing scores make it an appealing retirement destination.
