An urgent appeal has been launched by the RSPCA after a wood pigeon was shot with a catapult in a disturbing act of animal cruelty in South Ockendon, Essex.
The bird was discovered bleeding from its wing at Dene Path, near Dilkes Park, at around 3pm on January 24. A concerned member of the public rushed the injured pigeon to South Essex Wildlife Hospital, where X-rays later revealed a ball bearing lodged inside the bird’s body—consistent with a catapult attack.
Tragically, the pigeon had to be euthanised due to the severity of its injuries.
Appeal to Identify Man Seen in Area
The RSPCA has since launched an appeal to identify a man who may be able to assist with their enquiries. He is described as being in his late 30s, of slim build, with facial stubble, and was seen wearing a dark camouflage jacket and black tracksuit bottoms.
Deputy Chief Inspector Emma Beynon of the RSPCA described the incident as “very distressing,” especially given its public location.
“This upsetting incident took place in a public place and would have been a very distressing incident to witness,” she said.
“We’d like to thank the caring person who took the pigeon to a vet and to those who have helped out with our enquiries so far.
However, we are looking for anyone with first-hand information which could help our enquiries.”
