A 31-year-old man from Brighton has been arrested in connection with a series of burglaries targeting businesses across Sussex and Surrey throughout October. The incidents involved tools being stolen from garages and storage containers, with police linking at least eight reported crimes.
Timeline of Burglaries
The burglaries spanned from October 9 to October 30, with businesses in various locations reporting losses. Key incidents included:
- October 9: High-value tools stolen from a garage in Hangleton Road, Hove.
- October 11: A workshop in Stanmer Park, Brighton, burgled with similar tools taken.
- October 18: A business in Dumbrells Court Road, Ditchling, targeted, and equipment stolen.
- October 18: A garage in Hollingbury Rise, Brighton, burgled with similar items reported missing.
- October 19: A storage container in The Hyde, Brighton, raided for tools.
- October 25: Power tools stolen from a business on London Road, Burgess Hill.
- October 29: Attempted burglary at a premises in Farm Lane, Ashtead, foiled by an alarm.
- October 30: Tools stolen after a container was forced open at a business in Horton Lane, Epsom.
Pursuit and Arrest
The breakthrough came on November 30, when officers pursued a black Citroën Berlingo on the A23 near Albourne. The vehicle, suspected of being linked to the burglaries, failed to stop and caused damage to multiple police vehicles during the chase.
A short while later, the vehicle was located in Willow Way, Hurstpierpoint, leading to the arrest of a 31-year-old man nearby. He was taken into custody on suspicion of seven burglaries, one attempted burglary, criminal damage, dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified.
Appeal for Information
The suspect has been conditionally bailed while police continue their investigations. Sussex Police believe further suspects may be involved and have urged the public to come forward with any information that could aid their enquiries.
