A 44-year-old man has been given a nine-month suspended sentence after punching a woman twice in the face during an antisemitic attack in Shoreham, Sussex.
Attack Sparks After Heated Market Stall Row
Romilly Hudson launched the unprovoked assault in January 2025 when the victim approached a market stall linked to the Gaza conflict, hoping for a calm, reasoned chat.
Instead, Hudson hurled antisemitic abuse before landing two punches to her face, leaving bruises on her eye, ear, and cheek.
Sentence Upgraded for Racist Hate Crime
Hudson initially pleaded guilty to racially aggravated assault and harassment back in October 2025. On 16 March 2026, Worthing Magistrates’ Court boosted his sentence from eight to nine months, suspended for 18 months, due to the hate crime element.
He also received a £120 fine—up from £80—and a one-year restraining order.
Prosecutors Condemn Antisemitic Violence
“The victim in this case wanted to have a reasoned and peaceful discussion with people, but Romilly Hudson did not want anything of the sort,” said Kris Venkatasami, Chief Crown Prosecutor.

“Instead, he shouted a stream of highly charged and incendiary racist abuse at her, before launching an unprovoked attack and punching her in the face.
No one should be subjected to violence and abuse, based on their race. That is unacceptable and the Crown Prosecution Service is clear – antisemitism has no place in our society.”
The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed its firm stance against racially and religiously aggravated offences that target communities.
