A Brighton man has been found guilty of raping a woman at knifepoint in the heart of the city.
Philip Smith Caught After Shocking Attack
Philip Smith, 28, of no fixed address, was convicted at Lewes Crown Court on Thursday (26 February) of two counts of rape. The harrowing attack happened in Bartholomew Square in the early hours of Saturday, 9 August 2025.
At around 3.30am, police were called following a report that a woman had been threatened with a knife and assaulted on a public bench. The 31-year-old victim managed to alert a nearby friend, who interrupted the attacker.
Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest
- Smith was arrested less than an hour later near Quadrophenia Alley in Little East Street.
- He matched the victim’s description and was found carrying multiple knives, including one matching the victim’s account.
- Class A drugs were also seized from his possession.
While in custody at Brighton Custody Centre, Smith committed further offences by exposing himself to two women.
Serious Charges and Previous Offences
Smith faced charges including two counts of rape, two counts of indecent exposure, possession of a Class A drug, and carrying a bladed article in public. He pleaded guilty to all except the rape charges.
Notably, Smith was already on court bail, awaiting sentencing for a separate sexual assault that took place just days earlier on 5 August 2025.
Justice Served, Sentencing Set
The jury found Smith guilty of both rape charges. He remains in custody ahead of his sentencing at Hove Trial Centre on 25 June.
“Philip Smith subjected this woman to a horrific ordeal in the city centre, in an area where she had every right to feel safe,” said Detective Constable Rachel Cutts.
“Thanks to her quick-thinking, her friend’s prompt action, and our officers’ rapid response, a dangerous offender has been brought to justice.
“We continue to work hard to protect women and girls in Brighton and Hove and ensure victims receive support.”
