Major M40 Motorway Closure After Fatal Collision, Drivers Warned of Significant Delays

The M40 motorway in Warwickshire remains closed northbound between junctions 12 (Gaydon) and 14 (Leamington Spa) following a serious multi-vehicle collision early this morning. Motorists have been warned to expect significant delays of over an hour, with congestion stretching back at least three miles.

Warwickshire Police and emergency services, including West Midlands Ambulance Service, are currently attending the scene. National Highways Traffic Officers are also present to assist with traffic management while the closure is in effect.

The incident, which occurred around 5:45 a.m., involved a collision between a van and a lorry. Sadly, the van driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesperson for the West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust confirmed, “We were called to reports of a collision between junctions 12 and 13 of the M40 northbound near Gaydon at around 5.45 a.m. Sadly, it quickly became clear that the driver of the van could not be saved and was confirmed dead at the scene. The lorry driver was not injured.”

Diversion in Place

Drivers are advised to follow the “Solid Square” diversion symbol on road signs. Those travelling northbound should exit at J12 and take the B4451 towards Gaydon, continuing onto the B4100 and following the diversion for approximately seven miles. The diversion route will eventually lead drivers back to the M40 at J14.

National Highways has stated that the road is expected to remain closed for an “extended period of time.” Motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible, plan alternative routes, or even delay their journeys.

In a statement posted on social media, the police said, “The M40 is closed northbound between junction 12 for Gaydon and junction 13 for Warwick following a collision.
