A42 Southbound Closed Near Ashby de la Zouch Due to Lorry Load Spillage

The southbound carriageway of the A42 near Ashby de la Zouch has been temporarily closed following a lorry shedding its load of glass containers, causing significant disruptions.

National Highways reported the road closure extending from the Junction 14 M1 link to Junction 13 at Ashby de la Zouch. Emergency services are currently at the scene, with Traffic Officers en route to manage the situation.

Road users in the area are advised to plan for additional travel time to accommodate the closure. As of the latest update just after 6 PM, the southbound carriageway remained closed, with ongoing efforts to clear the spillage of glass containers from the lorry.

One lane of the northbound carriageway is also closed, leading to delays of approximately 15 minutes on the M1 and A453 southbound, with traffic congestion nearly reaching Ratcliffe-on-Soar.

A diversion route has been established to guide motorists around the affected area. Road users are encouraged to follow the Solid Diamond diversion symbol displayed on road signs. Here are the diversion instructions:

  1. Exit the A453 (southbound) at the A42/A453 Finger Farm Roundabout and take the first exit onto the A42 south.
  2. Continue southbound, staying in the left lane, and take the free flow lane onto the M1 (southbound).
  3. Continue south on the M1 to J23 and then exit the motorway.
  4. At the M1 J23, take the third exit onto the A512 (westbound).
  5. Continue westbound on the A512, passing through various junctions until reaching the A42 junction 13 at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, covering a distance of approximately 7.5 miles.
  6. At the A42 J13, take the first exit onto the A42 southbound.

Motorists are advised to follow these diversion instructions to avoid the road closure and potential traffic congestion. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
