A Ford Fiesta was engulfed in flames in the Dartford Tunnel on Sunday afternoon, causing significant traffic disruption as emergency services rushed to the scene.

The incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m., when the vehicle caught fire, forcing the closure of two lanes at the busy crossing. Large plumes of smoke were seen billowing from the tunnel as drivers were redirected, resulting in long delays and tailbacks.

Emergency services, including fire crews and rescue personnel, responded quickly to extinguish the blaze and secure the area. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, and the driver managed to escape the vehicle safely before it was consumed by flames.

A spokesperson for the fire service said:
“Our teams worked swiftly to contain the fire and ensure the safety of those in the area. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.”
Motorists were advised to avoid the crossing as traffic backed up for several miles in both directions. National Highways implemented diversions and warned of prolonged delays throughout the afternoon.
Witnesses described the scene as “dramatic” and praised the quick response of emergency teams, who cleared the area to prevent further escalation.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire. Drivers are urged to remain patient as traffic conditions return to normal.
