A large fire engulfed the derelict former Debenhams store in Canterbury High Street on the evening of December 2, prompting a significant emergency response and the evacuation of nearby residents. Crews worked through the night and into the next day to bring the blaze under control.
Extent of the Fire
The fire, which started around 8:30 PM, sent thick plumes of smoke billowing across Canterbury, visible for miles. Witnesses reported seeing multiple fire engines and emergency vehicles at the scene, with smoke reaching nearby businesses and streets.

Assistant Director of Response for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, Neil Griffiths, described the fire as a “significant” incident. He explained that the old structure of the building, with numerous voids, made extinguishing the flames particularly challenging.
“At the height of the fire, approximately 50 firefighters, eight fire engines, and specialist equipment were deployed. The first engine arrived within four minutes, allowing us to prevent the fire from spreading to Canterbury’s historical buildings,” said Mr. Griffiths.
Evacuations and Injuries
Around 30 residents from nine flats in the vicinity were evacuated. One individual was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and transferred to SECAmb paramedics. No other injuries have been reported.
A welfare centre was set up by the Canterbury City Council to assist displaced residents. Council staff provided shelter, warmth, and support throughout the night.
Road Closures and Public Advisories
Police cordoned off Guildhall Street and surrounding roads to allow emergency services to manage the scene. Residents and businesses were initially advised to keep doors and windows closed due to the heavy smoke. As of the latest update, the fire is under control, and this advisory has been lifted.
While most of the area has reopened, Guildhall Street remains closed for cleanup operations and further investigation.

The former Debenhams store has been derelict since the retail giant went into administration in 2020. Plans for redevelopment into 12 retail units and 74 flats, as part of the £25 million Guildhall Quarter project, have stalled due to environmental concerns over water pollution at the nearby Stodmarsh Nature Reserve.
Residents have expressed frustration over the abandoned state of the building, which has become a local eyesore. The recent fire has intensified calls for action on the site’s future.
