Station Commander Mike Watts, overseeing operations, said:
“This fire is producing a lot of smoke, and we strongly advise local residents to keep their windows and doors closed. Road closures are in place, and we urge people to avoid the area, particularly during rush hour.”
Evacuations and Injuries
Eighteen residents were evacuated, and five people were taken to the hospital as a precaution. Among the evacuees were Veysel Kesel, 61, and a 25-year-old woman, both of whom shared their experiences of fleeing their homes during the night.
Kesel, standing at the fire cordon draped in a blanket, said:
“It was the middle of the night. We ran for our lives. I hope my flat is okay. It’s very cold, and I don’t want to be homeless with the holidays coming up.”
Islington Council is arranging temporary shelter for displaced residents.
Fire in West Hampstead
Just a few miles away, another fire broke out in a house converted into flats in Lyncroft Gardens, West Hampstead. Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters were dispatched to tackle the blaze, which affected part of the building’s roof. Approximately 25 residents were evacuated, and there were no reported injuries.
Drones and a 64-metre turntable ladder were used to combat the fire and survey the scene from above.
Investigation Underway
Both incidents are under investigation to determine their causes. Specialist teams are expected to remain on-site throughout the day to monitor the situation and ensure safety.
