Last night, just before 11 PM on New Year’s Day 1st January 2024, a high-stakes police chase ended in a catastrophic collision at the junction of Wellhall Road in Eltham.
After a vehicle was flagged by an onboard ANPR for having no insurance a pursuit was started but the vehicle was driven recklessly by the driver along Well Hall Road who failed to stop.

Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, and London Ambulance Service were rapidly dispatched to the scene following the incident, which involved two police-marked vehicles a London bus and an uninsured Silver Vauxhall Corsa.

The police chase, involving Metropolitan Police officers and a suspect, took a dangerous turn resulting in the collision after the Corsa Reversa rammed one of the Traffic cars.

Officers and the suspect were trapped in the wreckage, necessitating urgent intervention from the fire brigade. Fire crews attended and made the vehicle and scene safe.

Paramedics treated the injured party who is understood to be the driver of the Corsa and two Police officers

Both the officers and the suspect have been reported injured and were promptly taken to a local hospital. Details about their conditions remain undisclosed at this time.

The severity of the incident has led to road closures in both directions, with the Catford Serious Collision Investigation Unit of the Metropolitan Police initiating a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
The area around Wellhall Road is expected to remain closed for several hours as investigators work at the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
