The civil resistance movement “Oil Kills,” aimed at ending the use of fossil fuels by 2030, has escalated its actions to include North America, with Montreal Airport experiencing significant disruptions today. Supporters of Last Generation Canada joined forces with fellow activists from the US and Europe, marking a significant expansion in the scale of the protests.
The disruptions at Montreal Airport are part of a larger wave of actions that saw seven groups cause similar disturbances at airports across Europe earlier today. In total, 14 groups from 10 different countries have engaged in nonviolent protests to advocate for the signing of a Fossil Fuel Treaty, which seeks to terminate the use of oil, gas, and coal within the next seven years.
Authorities at Montreal Airport and other affected locations are working to manage the situation and minimize inconvenience to travelers while ensuring safety amid the protests. Meanwhile, environmental activists continue to urge governments and corporations globally to commit to the Fossil Fuel Treaty and accelerate the shift towards sustainable energy solutions.
