Helicopter Crash on Isle of Wight: One Person Airlifted to Hospital as AAIB Launches Investigation

A major investigation is underway after a helicopter crashed in a field on the Isle of Wight this morning, leaving one person seriously injured.

Emergency Response

The aircraft came down shortly after 09:30am between Gold Hill and Shanklin, sparking a large emergency service response.

  • Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service sent multiple fire engines.

  • Isle of Wight Ambulance Service dispatched four ambulances, a rapid response paramedic, and an operational commander.

  • Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was scrambled, and one casualty has since been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital.

Police closed nearby roads and urged drivers to avoid the area.

Witness Describes Helicopter “Spiralling”

One witness said she saw the helicopter “spiralling” before it disappeared from sight. It is understood the aircraft may have struck a hedge line before coming down in a field.

Local Councillor Adrian Whittaker, said it was “very lucky” that no cars on the ground were hit given the heavy Bank Holiday traffic in the area.

He added that the helicopter was believed to have been carrying up to four people and may have been operating as a sightseeing flight.

AAIB Investigation

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has confirmed it is deploying a team to the Isle of Wight.

A spokesperson said:

“The AAIB was notified of an accident involving a light helicopter on the Isle of Wight this morning. We are deploying a team to commence an investigation.”

Casualty Update

The number of people onboard has not yet been confirmed, nor has the condition of those injured beyond the one patient already flown to hospital.

Authorities are expected to remain at the crash site for several hours as inquiries continue.
