M2 Crash Closes Road for Nine Hours as Air Ambulance Airlifts Casualty

Drivers Face Severe Delays Between Sittingbourne and Faversham

A serious collision on the M2 coastbound resulted in a nine-hour road closure between Junction 5 for Sittingbourne and Junction 6 at Faversham, leaving motorists stranded for hours.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:45 PM on Sunday, February 16, causing significant disruption on one of Kent’s busiest routes.

Emergency Response and Airlifted Casualty

Emergency services, including Kent Police, paramedics, and fire crews, rushed to the scene where a vehicle had struck a barrier on the eastbound carriageway.

An air ambulance was called to airlift a female casualty to a London hospital due to serious injuries, while a male passenger was transported to a local hospital by road ambulance.

The M2 eastbound was completely shut to allow for rescue operations and vehicle recovery. One lane reopened around 8:45 PM, while the other remained closed overnight to allow for barrier repairs and oil spill cleanup.

The woman’s injuries are described as serious but not life-threatening.

Drivers Stranded for Hours

Motorists faced long queues and significant delays as traffic came to a standstill for several hours.

London-Bound Delays and Ongoing Repairs

The London-bound carriageway also experienced heavy delays due to a separate reported collision.

Highways teams worked through the night to repair damaged barriers and clean up an oil spill left by the crash.

Motorists are urged to check travel updates before setting off and use alternative routes where possible.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage is asked to contact Kent Police at 101.
