In a proactive response to concerns over anti-social behavior (ASB) in Folkestone, local police officers have charged a man with multiple offences following patrols in the town.
On Monday, February 19, 2024, neighbourhood police conducted patrols in Middelburg Square, an area identified by the community for its ASB incidents. During their patrol, officers encountered a group of individuals acting suspiciously, leading to the arrest of one man.
Curtis Tipton, aged 53, of no fixed address, was subsequently charged with theft, obstructing a police officer, and obstructing a police search. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, February 27.
The swift action by officers is part of ongoing efforts to address nuisance behavior and loitering in the area. Additional patrols over several days have resulted in the dispersal of groups suspected of engaging in ASB.
These measures align with initiatives undertaken by Folkestone’s Community Safety Partnership (CSP), a collaborative effort involving Kent Police and Folkestone and Hythe District Council. The partnership is focusing on addressing issues around an underpass in Middelburg Square, where signs of previous drug misuse have been reported.
Recently, the CSP allocated funds from the Safer Streets Project to the Folkestone Town Sprucer voluntary group. Part of this funding will be used to clean up the underpass and remove debris, enhancing safety and cleanliness in the area.
Folkestone and Hythe District successfully secured funding through the Safer Streets 5 fund, with support from the Office of the Kent Police and Crime Commissioner. This project aims to invest in crime prevention initiatives targeting neighbourhood crime, ASB, and violence against women and girls.
The funding will support new initiatives while building upon existing efforts, including upgrading the town’s CCTV network, implementing youth outreach programs to tackle ASB, providing training and education for individuals working in public spaces, and addressing graffiti and litter.
Detective Inspector James Wyles, from Folkestone’s Community Safety Unit, affirmed the commitment of law enforcement to address community concerns. He highlighted the partnership’s collaboration with local groups and the ongoing Safer Streets Project, expressing optimism for improved outcomes in reducing crime and ASB.
