Officer Resigned Before Shocking Crimes Came to Light

A serving City of London Police officer has been jailed after stealing £50,000 in a burglary and harassing his partner, a court heard today.

Ex-Cop Walked Away Before Allegations Surfaced

Christopher Trowton, 39, from Devon, was sentenced to three years and seven months at Kingston Crown Court after pleading guilty. The former officer stole a huge cash sum during an off-duty burglary in May 2022 in Hampshire.

He resigned from the force on June 27, 2022, just weeks after the heist, before police started investigating the scandal.

Burglar and Harasser

  • Trowton seized £50,000 in cash from the home he burgled while off-duty.
  • Shortly after, he was arrested by the Metropolitan Police on August 10, 2022, and charged two days later.
  • He also admitted to harassing his partner, resulting in a restraining order.

Police Furious Over Betrayal of Trust

“Trowton was fully aware his actions were unlawful, morally reprehensible and scared his victims,” said Detective Superintendent Carly Humphreys, head of the City of London Police Professional Standards Department. “He was a serving police officer at the time – his disgraceful behaviour has damaged trust in policing.”
