The sharp senses of two Kent Police officers have led to another arrest in the force’s ongoing December road safety campaign targeting drink and drug driving.
While on patrol in Branbridges Road, East Peckham, officers from the Roads Policing Unit detected a strong smell of cannabis emanating from a truck as it passed by.

Arrest and Investigation
The vehicle was promptly stopped, and the driver, a 33-year-old man from the Tonbridge area, was subjected to a roadside drug test, which he failed. A small quantity of herbal cannabis was also found in his possession.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Campaign Progress
The arrest adds to the more than 100 people detained since the start of Kent Police’s annual drink and drug driving campaign, which runs throughout December.
Driving Risks Highlighted
Chief Inspector Craig West of Kent Police emphasized the dangers of driving under the influence:
“People who drive when unfit to do so could end up losing their licence, their job, or even their life. They also risk causing serious injury or death to other road users when it is easily avoidable.”
He continued:
“Kent Police officers are trained to spot the signs of drink and drug driving. If you get behind the wheel while under the influence, there’s a good chance you will be stopped and taken into custody. Please do not drink or drug drive in the run-up to Christmas or at any other time of the year. There is no excuse, and it is simply not worth the risk.”
The ‘Fatal Factors’
Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is classified as one of the ‘fatal factors’ that significantly increase the risk to road users. Other factors include speeding, distractions such as mobile phones, and not wearing a seatbelt.
Kent Police continues to urge motorists to drive responsibly and safely, particularly during the festive season.
