Firefighters continue to monitor the scene of a devastating blaze that engulfed the abandoned Debenhams store at the junction of Guildhall Street and Canterbury High Street. The fire, which began at around 8:45 PM on Monday, has prompted an extensive emergency response and remains under investigation.
Emergency Response
Three fire service vehicles remain on-site this morning, as crews work to ensure the fire is fully extinguished. A cordon is still in place around the affected building, restricting access to Guildhall Street and parts of the High Street. However, pedestrian access has been restored on the opposite side of the street.
At the height of the blaze, over 50 firefighters were deployed, with eight fire engines and two height vehicles battling the flames throughout the night. Around 30 residents were evacuated from nearby properties, and one man was treated for smoke inhalation.
Arson Suspect in Custody
A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of arson yesterday after voluntarily attending Canterbury Police Station. He remains in custody for questioning. Authorities have not yet released further details about the arrest or any potential motive.
