Thousands of Santander Bikes Out of Service Across London After Software Glitch
Overview
Thousands of commuters across London were left stranded this morning after a widespread outage hit the Santander Cycles hire scheme, following a failed software update.
Users reported that docking stations, key fobs, and even the official app and website were all down, preventing them from accessing the iconic red bicycles. The issue began in the early hours of Tuesday morning and has persisted throughout the day, affecting thousands of users who rely on the service for their daily commute.
Transport for London (TfL) confirmed that the disruption was due to planned software upgrades overrunning, which has rendered large parts of the network inoperable.
‘No Warning’ — Commuters Frustrated
Frustrated users took to social media to express their anger at the lack of early warning. One commuter posted:
“Just been to a dock and fobs aren’t working on manual or pedal bikes. App not loading and website doesn’t allow you to sign in. Tried again at 7:15am — still nothing.”
Another user questioned why TfL hadn’t notified customers sooner, particularly as many rely on the bikes for last-mile journeys to work.
TfL responded around midday with an email to registered Santander Cycle users:
“Due to planned software upgrades overrunning, Santander Cycles are currently unavailable to hire. We’re sorry for the disruption caused. We’re working hard to restore services as soon as possible and will let you know when our cycles are available for hire again.”
Engineers Working to Restore Service
Engineers are said to be working “at pace” to resolve the technical issues. However, no estimated time for full service resumption has been given.
Metro understands that users with a key fob may still be able to hire bikes at certain docks, though many docking stations remain unresponsive.
Santander Cycles — A London Fixture Since 2010
The Santander Cycles scheme, originally launched as Barclays Cycle Hire in 2010, has grown into one of London’s most visible transport options, boasting over 12,000 bikes and hundreds of docking stations across the capital. The bikes — affectionately nicknamed Boris Bikes — are used by both commuters and tourists, with usage surging in recent years due to the introduction of electric-assist e-bikes.
Calls for Improved Communication
Many users expressed frustration over the timing and communication surrounding the outage. August is a peak travel season, with many commuters and tourists relying on bike hire schemes. Calls for more robust customer alerts and real-time service updates have been mounting.
A TfL spokesperson told UKNIP
“We’re very sorry for the disruption caused to Santander Cycles this morning. This is due to planned software upgrades overrunning and we’re working hard to restore services as soon as possible.”
What Next?
As of this afternoon, TfL has not confirmed when services will be fully operational again. Passengers are advised to check TfL’s website and social media channels for live updates.
