Oxfordshire and London Fire Brigades Mourn Loss of Beloved Colleague

The family of firefighter Martyn Sadler, 38, have paid heartfelt tribute following his tragic death during an emergency response to a fire at Bicester Motion, on Buckingham Road, on Thursday, 15 May.

Martyn served with Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service and the London Fire Brigade, dedicating his life to public safety with extraordinary commitment. His death has deeply affected both services and the wider emergency services community.

‘Martyn Was Born to Be a Firefighter’

In a statement released by his family, Martyn was remembered not only as a hero, but as a man who had firefighting in his blood:

“Martyn was born to be a firefighter. Coming from a strong fire service family it was always in his blood, but it was significantly more than that with him—it was his life. The passion and dedication he had for the job was outstanding.”

From his earliest days, Martyn was drawn to the fire service, inspired by shows like Fireman Sam and London’s Burning. He began his journey as soon as he was eligible to join the fire cadets, setting the course for what became a career of achievement, camaraderie, and bravery.

A Hero, A Husband, A Friend

The family continued:

“He was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle and all-round family member, an amazing friend, a committed colleague and the true definition of a hero.

Our world has fallen apart and our hearts are completely broken, but somewhere in amongst it all we are immensely proud of him and his unwavering bravery.”

Martyn’s loss is not only felt by his loved ones but also by colleagues across both brigades, who have described him as a dedicated firefighter with a warm personality and deep sense of duty.

Investigation and Tributes Continue

Investigations into the fire at Bicester Motion are ongoing. Thames Valley Police and the fire service have extended their condolences and are supporting Martyn’s family during this difficult time.

Flags at fire stations in both counties have been lowered to half-mast, and colleagues have paid their respects online, describing Martyn as “one of the best” and “a man who gave everything.”
