Ugandan long-distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically passed away at the age of 33 following an alleged attack by her former boyfriend. According to reports, Cheptegei was doused in petrol and set on fire during a domestic dispute on Sunday. The incident occurred in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya, where the athlete had recently settled to be closer to several athletic training centres.
Cheptegei sustained burns covering 80% of her body and was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret City for treatment. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries on Thursday.
The Ugandan Athletics Federation expressed its profound grief, stating, “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace.”
