A20 Shut Again as Bomb Squad Searches Continue After Hollingbourne Police Shooting
The A20 near Maidstone remains subject to temporary closures as bomb disposal teams continue their investigation at the scene of a dramatic police shooting in Hollingbourne.
A section of the road between Hollingbourne roundabout and Hospital Road has now been shut four times since Monday, July 7, with Kent Police confirming that further closures are expected.
The road was most recently closed on Thursday afternoon while Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers worked at a property near the Park Gate Inn pub, where the incident originally unfolded.
Armed Standoff and Police Shooting
The ongoing disruption follows a violent confrontation at a property off Ashford Road, where 36-year-old plumber Sean O’Meara was shot by armed police after allegedly approaching officers while wielding a chainsaw. He was reportedly also wearing a gas mask and body armour and carrying a suspected explosive device.
Mr. O’Meara remains in a critical condition in hospital, while police and bomb disposal units continue to search the grounds of the home.
Suspicious Devices Found
So far, four suspected explosive devices have been discovered on the property, prompting a major response from Kent Police and specialist army teams.
On Thursday, the nearby M20 motorway was also closed in both directions between junctions 8 and 9, causing widespread delays as traffic was diverted via the A2/M2 corridor.
A Kent Police spokesperson confirmed:
“Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers will continue conducting searches in the area to ensure the site is fully safe. The A20 will remain subject to closures while this work continues.”
Police Statement and Community Impact
Chief Superintendent Neil Loudon, Divisional Commander for Kent Police West, praised the public for their patience amid ongoing disruption.
“Officers are carrying out a very complex investigation and safety is their number one priority. At least four suspicious devices have been found at the scene, and it is important that the area is made safe,” he said.
“There is no wider threat to the Hollingbourne community at this time, but the disruption to residents, businesses, and road users is not lost on us.”
Road Closures Ongoing
Although the A20 was temporarily reopened this morning, police warned it may be shut again without notice while the investigation continues. Drivers are being advised to seek alternative routes.
The search of the property is expected to last several more days, with a significant police presence remaining in the area.
