A20 Near Maidstone Shuts Again as Bomb Squad Battles Explosives After Police Shooting
The A20 near Maidstone is caught in chaos once more. Bomb disposal teams remain at the scene following a dramatic police shooting in Hollingbourne. Since Monday, July 7, the stretch between Hollingbourne roundabout and Hospital Road has been shut four times – and more closures are expected.
Armed Standoff Ends in Chainsaw Chaos
The drama erupted at a property off Ashford Road, where 36-year-old plumber Sean O’Meara was shot by armed officers. Eyewitnesses say he approached police wielding a chainsaw, decked out in gas mask and body armour, and carrying a suspected explosive device.
O’Meara is now in critical condition in hospital. Meanwhile, police and bomb squads continue scouring the property and surrounding grounds for further dangers.
Four Suspected Bombs Found, M20 Also Closed
So far, four suspicious explosive devices have been uncovered on the site, sparking a massive response involving Kent Police and specialist army EOD units.
On Thursday, the nearby M20 motorway was shut in both directions between junctions 8 and 9, causing major delays with traffic diverted via the A2/M2 corridor. Police warn that the A20 closures could continue at short notice as the bomb squad carries out thorough searches.
“Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers will continue conducting searches in the area to ensure the site is fully safe. The A20 will remain subject to closures while this continues,” said a Kent Police spokesperson.
Police Stress Safety, No Wider Community Threat
Chief Superintendent Neil Loudon, Kent Police West’s Divisional Commander, praised local patience during the ongoing disruption. He stressed that the investigation is complex and safety remains the top priority.
“At least four suspicious devices have been found at the scene, and it is important that the area is made safe,” Loudon said.
“There is no wider threat to the Hollingbourne community at this time, but the disruption to residents, businesses, and road users is not something we take lightly.”
Road Closures to Continue – Drivers Urged to Find Alternatives
The A20 briefly reopened on Friday morning but police warned it could close again without warning. The bomb squad’s search is expected to drag on for several more days, with a heavy police presence staying put.
Motorists are urged to plan alternative routes and prepare for ongoing delays around Maidstone as authorities race to make the area safe.
