A man in his 30s was discovered dead inside his car nearly 28 hours after it smashed down a steep embankment just off the M61 motorway.

The tragic discovery happened on Monday, March 23, after emergency services responded to reports around 2am. The Audi A3 driver lost control around 10pm on Saturday night, but wasn’t found until nearly a day later.

Police confirmed the man, from Nelson, Lancashire, died at the scene from serious injuries sustained in the crash.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Lancashire Police’s Serious Collision Unit is investigating and has urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.

Sgt Bex Price, Road Policing Unit: “This collision has very sadly resulted in a man losing his life. I would appeal to anyone who has any information or footage which may have captured this vehicle prior to the collision to get in touch.”

Motorway Closed for Investigation

Emergency services remained on scene throughout the day, closing the northbound carriageway at junction 9 for investigation work.
