A reckless driver has been jailed for causing the death of a 65-year-old motorcyclist in a shocking head-on collision near Sherburn-in-Elmet.
Deadly Danger on B1222
On 27 May 2024, Matthew Hull, 22, recklessly overtook on a dangerous stretch of the B1222, ignoring solid white lines and limited visibility caused by a hidden dip and crest.
His white Renault Clio Sport crashed head-on into Stephen Jackson’s motorcycle. Mr Jackson died instantly at the scene.
Man Admits “Stupid Overtake”
Hull confessed to police that impatience led him to make a “stupid overtake.” He admitted his driving fell “far below” the expected standard and was “dangerous.”
Despite Hull’s actions, Mr Jackson was riding safely within his lane.
Justice Delivered at York Crown Court
After pleading guilty at York Magistrates Court in March 2026, Hull was sentenced on 30 March to seven years and four months behind bars.
“This tragic case shows how one reckless move can cost a life,” said TC Gemma Brett of North Yorkshire Police. “Overtaking must only be done when safe and legal. If in doubt, don’t risk it.”

“I lost my husband, best friend, and soulmate,” said Janet Coster, wife of the late Stephen Jackson. “The grief is unimaginable. His love, guidance, and presence have been taken away forever. This loss has changed every part of my life.”
