Homes in Eastbourne have been evacuated this evening after a suspicious piece of ordnance was reportedly discovered near Hyde Road, just off Grove Road.
The alert was raised shortly before 10pm, with Sussex Police closing off Grove Road near the roundabout by the train station. Officers quickly cordoned off the area and began evacuating residents from surrounding properties as a precautionary measure.
Emergency services are on site and an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team has reportedly been requested. The exact nature of the item has not yet been confirmed by Sussex Police.
Motorists and pedestrians are being diverted away from Grove Road, and access to nearby streets may be restricted until the situation is resolved.
