Armed man attempts to break into nursery and primary school
A crazed man armed with two large, blood-soaked knives tried to force his way into Sighthill Primary School and Early Years Centre in Edinburgh at around 8.25am today. Witnesses say the blades were taped to his hands as he lurked in the school grounds in the Calder area.
Local resident Abigail Clegg told the Press Association: “He tried to get into the school, the nursery,” but was quickly chased off by staff and locals. He then stormed into a nearby shop, ransacking it in a violent frenzy.
Knife rampage injures at least two – shops shut down
Eyewitnesses reported the man prowled the school playground and caused chaos in the Calder Park shop, wrecking the place. A woman who wished to remain anonymous said: “The shops are all closed down now.”
Staff at Brunch café shut up shop between 8am and 8.30am after spotting the suspect lurking behind their premises, fearing for their safety.
At least two people were stabbed during the rampage and were rushed to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. A third victim also suffered injuries. The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed dispatching multiple units and a special operations team to the scene after an emergency call at 8.34am.
Tense standoff as suspect barricaded in flat
Police say the attacker retreated to a flat at Cobbinshaw House, sparking a tense stand-off. Shocking images show the man grinning from a window as officers hold a tight cordon below. Around 100 locals gathered outside, some shouting at the knife-wielding suspect.
One brave local reportedly confronted the man with a metal bar after seeing him brandish the bloodied weapons.
Police rule out terror link – investigation ongoing
Chief Inspector Scott Kennedy of Police Scotland confirmed the situation is contained and not terror-related. The City of Edinburgh Council ordered the closure of all nearby council buildings, schools, and early years centres on police advice, though they aim to reopen soon.
Officers continue investigating and urge anyone with information to contact the police at the scene or call 101.
