Five Arrested and Seventeen Vehicles Seized in Greenwich Road Safety Operation

A coordinated multi-agency operation in Greenwich led to five arrests and the seizure of 17 vehicles as authorities cracked down on illegal driving activities and promoted road safety.

The operation, which took place yesterday at Yorkshire Grey McDonald’s and along Eltham High Street, involved officers from Greenwich Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT), Immigration Enforcement, the Vehicle Recovery Team, and Greenwich Council.

During the day-long operation, officers targeted vehicles suspected of being driven without insurance, licenses, or in violation of immigration laws. Seventeen vehicles were seized for various infractions, including lack of insurance and roadworthiness issues.

In addition to the vehicle seizures, five individuals were arrested on charges ranging from immigration offences to driving under the influence and possession of illegal substances.

A proactive element of the operation focused on education, with Greenwich Council handing out QR codes that linked drivers to a free Transport for London (TfL) driving course. The course aims to improve road safety awareness and encourage responsible driving within the community.

A spokesperson from Greenwich Metropolitan Police Service said:

This operation was a great example of multi-agency collaboration aimed at improving road safety and tackling crime. The seizures and arrests made yesterday demonstrate our commitment to keeping Greenwich’s streets safe. We’re also pleased to have been able to provide drivers with resources to improve their skills and knowledge, contributing to safer roads for everyone.

Local residents praised the initiative, with many expressing relief over efforts to reduce dangerous driving in busy community areas like Eltham High Street.

Further road safety operations are expected in the coming months as part of a wider campaign to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and improve safety for all road users in Greenwich.

Anyone with concerns about road safety or information regarding dangerous driving in the area is encouraged to contact Metropolitan Police via 101 or report anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
