The husband of Labour MP Joani Reid is in deep trouble. David Taylor, 39, was one of three men arrested across London and Wales on suspicion of spying for China and “targeting UK democracy.”
Three Men Held in Counter-Terror Cops’ Sting
Taylor, a lobbyist and director of PR firm Earthcott Limited, was nabbed alongside two others, aged 43 and 68. All face allegations of aiding a foreign intelligence service.
He also holds a role as director of policy and programmes at Asia House, a think tank that promotes economic ties between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
Labour MP Denies Any Involvement
“I have never seen anything to make me suspect my husband has broken any law,” said Joani Reid, MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven.
“I am not part of my husband’s business activities and neither I nor my children are part of this investigation.”
“I have never been to China or spoken about China-related issues in Parliament.”
“I am a social democrat who stands for freedom, free trade unions, and free elections—not an admirer of the Chinese Communist Party.”
Government Demands ‘Severe Consequences’
Security Minister Dan Jarvis told MPs the arrests relate to “foreign interference targeting UK democracy” and warned of harsh penalties if China is found meddling in UK affairs.
“If proven,” Jarvis said, “we will impose severe consequences and hold all actors involved to account.”
He praised the National Security Act for giving agencies the tools to crack down on such threats.
Police Continue Investigation
Counter Terrorism Policing London confirmed raids at multiple addresses in London, East Kilbride, Cardiff, and Powys.
Commander Helen Flanagan said the arrests are part of a wider probe, with no immediate threat to the public.
All three men remain in custody under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act pending further investigation.
