Justice at Last: Iain Packer Guilty of Murdering Glasgow Sex Worker Emma Caldwell
After 17 years on the run, former sign fitter Iain Packer has been found guilty of murdering 27-year-old sex worker Emma Caldwell in 2005. This verdict ends a long, painful wait for justice amid glaring police blunders.
Chilling Details of Emma’s Tragic Death
The court heard how Emma, a heroin addict following her sister’s sudden death, was coldly “executed” by Packer. In the 1990s, Packer was known in Glasgow for contacting sex workers and admitted to police that he had paid Emma for sex and taken her to remote woods for encounters.
Police Blunders Let Packer Walk Free for Years
Despite this, Packer escaped arrest for nearly two decades. Authorities wrongly targeted a group of Turkish men, while Packer faced 36 charges relating to offences against 25 women but denied all accusations at trial. Meanwhile, other sex workers’ warnings about Packer’s violent tendencies were allegedly ignored by police, sparking outrage.
Emma’s Mother Demands Accountability
“I feel as if I can breathe again now that this man is gone. I hope he gets a long enough sentence that he cannot harm anyone else,” said Emma’s mum, Margaret.
She described the moment she learnt of her daughter’s murder as “absolutely devastating” and vowed to keep fighting for justice, no matter Emma’s profession.
“If it’s true they knew about Iain Packer and didn’t arrest him and didn’t deal with him, then yes,” Margaret added, demanding a full investigation into the police’s mishandling of the case.
The family and their lawyers are pushing for answers and accountability. Police Scotland is expected to respond soon to calls for a thorough probe.
