Ayaan Rafiq, 31, from Keighley, has been locked up for lying to cops about stolen number plates in a desperate bid to dodge speeding fines.
Repeated Lies About Stolen Plates
In May 2023, Rafiq was caught speeding in Shipley in his BMW. He claimed the car’s number plates had been nicked, so the Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) was dropped.
But just two months later, caught speeding again on the M1, he spun the same tale.
Police Prove His Story Was Fake
Police used mobile phone tracking to bust Rafiq’s story. His phone was in the BMW at the exact times he was caught speeding, proving his claim of stolen plates was bogus.
Jailed and Banned from Driving
At Bradford Crown Court on Monday, 23 March, Rafiq pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice and making a false police report. He was sentenced to 20 months behind bars and slapped with a 22-month driving ban.
This wasn’t his first brush with the law over such offences. Earlier in 2024, he received a suspended sentence for a similar speeding escape attempt.
