Boris Johnson will make a statement at 12.30 p.m.

Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer has demanded that Boris Johnson step down as Prime Minister immediately, saying it is not fair to the country for him to continue as caretaker PM.

“He has to go; he can’t stay,” Starmer says.

“His own party has decided it’s time, so they won’t be able to impose him on the country for the foreseeable future.”

Insisting that Labour will take matters into its own hands if necessary, Starmer warns the Conservatives that if Johnson is not removed, “Labour will, in the national interest, bring a no confidence vote – because this can’t go on.

“We need a change of government, not just a change at the top.” “We require a Labour government.”

Mr Johnson is appointing new ministers today, after more than 50 MPs resigned from the government.

Kit Malthouse has been named Chancellor for the Duchy of Lancaster, the Cabinet Office’s most senior minister after the Prime Minister.

Greg Clark has taken over as Levelling Up Secretary in place of Michael Gove.
