Sixty firefighters have been scrambled to tackle a massive industrial fire near Lifford Lane in Cotteridge this morning. Thick black smoke billows high above the area after locals reported hearing an explosion.

Explosion Heard as Fire Erupts

Witnesses described a sudden blast followed by clouds of dark smoke and the wail of sirens. “I heard an explosion and then all the smoke and sirens,” said one local on social media. Another added, “Lots of police heading towards it.”

Emergency Services Battle Huge Fire

West Midlands Fire Service confirmed they received the call shortly after 10.30am on Wednesday, 1 April. Eleven fire engines, a hydraulic aerial platform, and a 4×4 response vehicle are on site with around 60 firefighters from multiple stations, including Kings Norton, Bournbrook, and Smethwick.
“This is a significant scrapyard fire, creating a large smoke plume. If you live or work nearby, please close your windows and doors. Traffic is disrupted, so avoid the area while we work,” said a fire service spokesperson.
West Midlands Ambulance Service also urged caution. “We’re on scene alongside fire and police teams. Nearby residents should keep windows and doors shut due to the smoke. Motorists must avoid the area,” a spokesperson said.
