RAF Fairford is in lockdown as roads around the base shut and protective screens go up to stop snoopers filming inside. The move comes after US Air Force bombers started using the site to launch operations against Iran.
Road Closures Spark Stir Among Residents and Spotters
Traffic cones now block parking on Whelford Road, a hotspot for keen plane spotters eager to catch a glimpse of the bombers that rolled in earlier this month. Dunfield Road, right next to the runway, is closed both ways to ease safety worries.
Joe Harris, Highways Cabinet Member at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “All of the measures currently in place have been agreed following discussions with Gloucestershire Constabulary and RAF Fairford.”

Residents can still get home, but locals report chaos as fans “just park wherever” they like.
Phil Kerton, leader of Neighbourhood Watch in Kempsford, warned: “The Loop road was like the M25. People were standing on the edge of the road in the dark without reflective clothing. You’d spot them at the last minute — it’s dangerous.”
Protective Screens and Military Secrecy
Big screens now shield the base from prying eyes after photos emerged of ordnance being prepped for strikes against Iran. The USAF says it’s on high alert to safeguard personnel and their families.
“The 501st Combat Support Wing remains vigilant and will take appropriate actions to ensure the safety and security of our US service members, civilians, contractors, and their families,” said a US Air Force spokesperson. “We constantly assess factors to decide which protective measures to employ or adjust.”
Military veteran Jo Hursey, who travelled from Royal Wootton Bassett to witness history, expressed concerns over spotters using ladders to peer over barriers.
“There’s sensitive info here. We need to smarten up and do the right thing,” she said.
UK’s Role in the Middle East Tensions
The British government has given the green light for US bases on UK soil to be used for “defensive” strikes on Iranian military targets. British forces are also aiding allies in the Gulf and Cyprus, but have steered clear of the wider conflict.
The heightened security and road closures near RAF Fairford clearly signal the seriousness of the ongoing situation—and Britain’s cautious stance amid rising Middle East tensions.
