Three Men Nabbed for Spying on China – One Tied to Labour MP
Counter-Terrorism Police Mount London and Wales Raids
In a dramatic swoop, counter-terrorism officers have arrested three men suspected of spying for China. One of the suspects is reportedly the partner of a current Labour MP, the BBC reveals. The arrests, targeting men aged 39, 43, and 68, happened across London and Wales under the National Security Act.
Police searched multiple properties in London, East Kilbride, and Cardiff. All three remain in custody as the probe intensifies.
Police Reassure Public: No Immediate Threat
The Metropolitan Police stressed there’s no “imminent or direct threat” to public safety amid the investigation. Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said the rise in national security cases is worrying.
“We have seen a significant increase in national security casework in recent years. Officers are actively working to disrupt malign activity where we suspect it,” Flanagan explained.
Political Fallout Looms Over Labour Connection
The link to a sitting Labour MP is set to spark fierce political scrutiny. While the MP’s identity remains under wraps, there is no suggestion the MP is under investigation.
This development has raised fresh concerns about alleged Chinese espionage operations reaching close to British politicians.
National Security Act Tools Used in Growing Spy Cases
The trio’s arrests add to a rising number of cases tackled under the National Security Act, designed to combat state-sponsored espionage and foreign interference. Beijing continues to deny spying accusations in the UK.
The Metropolitan Police haven’t disclosed exact details of the charges or investigation timeline, but more updates are expected soon.
