Thames Valley Police have issued a stark warning after a broken-down van was wiped out on the M4 early this morning. The driver and passengers made a life-saving choice to abandon the vehicle and wait safely behind the crash barrier. Their quick thinking likely prevented a deadly incident.
Van Hit by Lorry After Electrical Failure
The van broke down due to an electrical problem and pulled onto the hard shoulder. Despite chilly rain, the occupants left the vehicle and stayed well out of harm’s way. Moments later, a heavy goods vehicle drifted into the hard shoulder and smashed into the stranded van, destroying it.
Police Investigate Dangerous Lorry Driver
Officers confirmed the HGV driver is now under investigation for the crash. The incident could easily have ended in tragedy, police warn, urging all motorists to leave their vehicles and seek safety if they break down on motorways.
“The actions of those involved in leaving the vehicle likely saved their lives,” Thames Valley Police said. “Always prioritise safety over comfort.”
